The greatest run-in to a season's end ever. The permutations were unreal counting down the last few games.

A very good and exciting read still

How we pulled it off I don't know.

I remember the climax to that season very well. I was in the bath listening to the radio when news of Palace's 4-2 win came in. Lots of splashing!

There was then a very tense Saturday afternoon following the Wrexham v Mansfield game.

For once it all worked out well for Palace and fortunately that was the last time we were in the third tier of English football

I was at Wrexham that night, never been there before or since. What a night! Rach the Smash looped one in from a corner to make it 3-2 (that goal meant Wrexham had to draw on Saturday as they had better goal difference), and that must have been almost in injury time, and then from the re-start he sent Jeff Bourne through one on one, and he buried it. 4-2 - that goal made our goal difference better than Wrexham's so they had to win on Saturday.

The final whistle went, the Palace players all ran to the fans behind Peter Caswell's goal (look him up -think I can safely say this was the pinnacle of his career!) - I can remember Phil "Noddy" Holder climbing up the perimeter fence to try to get in among us - we were all delirious on the terrace.

Went back home on the train and when we got to London it was the small hours of the following morning, I remember seeing Ray Bloye and other CP dignitaries on the platform at Euston (or was it Kings X?), they were jubilant like us.

Work the next day, but sweating on the following Saturday - Wrexham v Mansfield, what a long afternoon that was, what a long week! But Ernie Moss, what a star! 0-1 - we were up, with Mansfield and the Weed.

A helluva final week to be sure. Did we not win the FA Youth Cup 1-0 too v Everton in front of 14,000 at Selhurst 3 days after the 4-2 and less than 24hrs before promotion and then have 4,000 turn up for a reserve game 3pm the next day?

Yes there too. 3 trains and I think 17 coaches, Wrexham went ballistic when they got back from 0-2 to 2-2 and we went even more son when we reached 2-4.Bloye and others were on our train and very out of it. Great game and better atmosphere, for newer fans think the Dowie promotion season but with Harkouk and Bourne in the AJ role.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

Kerm, you are right, Wrexham was on the Wednesday, and we played Everton in the Youth Cup final on the Friday, I'd forgotten that was the same week, 48 hours later. Terry Fenwick scored our Cup-winning goal, as he did the following season.

I didn't go to the reserve game, I was playing cricket while Mansfield were doing us one huge favour.

I only started following Palace in the beginning of 1977, aged 10, following their results. Then later that season looking up where Palace were in the table in the Sunday paper in 6th place.

We then started moving up the table.

Then we got to our last match of the season - Wrexham away having just beaten them two games before. I can't remember if I knew the result that night or the next day. That was our season over.

I can't remember for sure but I probably couldn't wait for the Sat. when as mentioned Wrexham had Mansfied at home and would lose which meant I had only been following Palace six months and already they had been involved in being promoted.

I couldn't wait till the following season as I would be going to my 1st Palace match with my Grandad

I have a lot to thank my late Grandad for as he got me interested in Palace. None of my family were interested in football.

All the more remarkable as, in the game before that run in, we managed to lose 4-1 away to a relegation threatened Port Vale and it looked all over. Took a bit of ribbing from various quarters, but I said hold on - We've still got to play Wrexham twice. Of course if Rotherham had won by 6 goals in their last game, they would have overtaken us - This was the cause of some concern to me on that final day, but they finished 4-1 winners and we had made the Great Escape!

Was Dave Meking right?

[Yea i was up there that night to still remember that feeling wwhen we went up and scored them two goals !! unbelievable ! down the other end we were going absolutly mental !! Had seen some great games before this including the games at Leeds Chelsea and Sunderland in that famous 76 cup run and saw many after such as the Burnley game in 79 or the famous semi-final victory over Liverpool but for me that game always stays in my mind as the greatest game of all ! Magical feelings of all those mentioned games that will stay with me till the day i die.quote]PalacePhotoMan at 31 Dec 2012 6.03pm
