Quite interesting to me to see all the modern facilities at the shrine--my first season was 1946 which of course pre-dates all the mod cons such as floodlights. I saw plenty of bomb sites of course but did not know that so much damage had been done so close to the ground.

Worked for the railway doing signals and telecoms in the early nineties, quite often there would be bomb disposal teams on the railway especially around Selhurst depot. With all that said, the reverse is that you look at the photo and you do realise how lucky we were to avoid the worst in the war. You'd be hard pressed to find a photo of Warsaw with a couple of battered roofs and an intact football stadium in the background!

If you have memories of this, I'm sure most of us would love to hear from you. When my father-in-law died twenty years ago, we acquired all of his stuff, most of which was of no interest. We boxed it up and stored it on the loft of our garage. Now that we are downsizing, we have to get rid of all the rubbish we have acquired since we have been married. Looking through the junk we found this photo, with, thankfully annotations on the back. It tells us where we are and what we are looking at. We should all be pleased that we are able to live our lives without having to deal with 'incidents' like this. Either.... 28th June 1944 V1 5 deaths or 1st July 1944 V1 0 deaths
I am ready, are you? Sheffield here we come. |
