Our Manager,Bert Head,who had Managed Swindon at one time,had made many attempts to lure him away from Swindon without any success. Rogers had demolished Arsenal in the League Cup Final at Wembley in 69,scoring twice. However,his persistence paid off when he did land him but the strange thing was that Dave Mackay Managed Swindon for just one season and whilst other Managers there wouldn't allow him to leave Mackay did........And shortly after that he left Swindon,which seemed very strange indeed at the time. I always thought it was convenient that Mackay allowed the deal to go through just before his departure. Nice one Bert!! His departure to QPR was interesting as well with Venables and Evans coming this way as part of the deal. It wasn't long before Malcolm Allison sussed out that Venables wasn't happy with the move,as he didn't really have much of an appetite to become a Palace player,so he sent on him on a coaching course to get his badges. And he got them,as we found out to our detriment in later years...........So to a certain extent Big Mal kick started his managerial career......Talking about kicking that's what Venables should have got up the @rse when he screwed us! Bumped into Big Mal quite a bit around the ground in those days,whilst bouncing around my old stomping grounds....lovely fella! Venables hur!!!! ........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................

If only we had caused the sacking of a subsequent ManU manager in May 1990!
I was at the 5-0 too, also the 5-1 Sheff U game, the evening of which I had to watch my sisters school play...someone found a portable television and we watched the highlights in one of the classrooms! ;o)

Once a Glazier, now an Eagle, Palace Forever.

If the team we had in 1969-70 could survive then it's a mystery to me that the 72/73 side were unable to. After the Everton game when the Don made his debut we only won a further six matches and one of those was a "dead" fixture against Man City we having already been relegated ( if my memory serves me right).

The Everton game was televised, but I think it was on the Big Match on the Sunday...Eagle In Cornwall may confirm that !

Yes, Blyth and Whittle had a scrap in a bad tempered FA Cup game v Everton. Not the league game. Shortly after, we signed Alan and they became team mates.

I had the pleasure of meeting DR and AW a few years ago. Both very pleasant guys who look back on their time with Palace with a lot of affection.

And on his day, Don was in a class of his own...
