For me, anyone who lives here now. I know some people want to go further than that, but I'd want us to support anyone of any background that is now in the UK. I just personally want us to be cautious about increasing that number until we have improved our ability to support the people that live in the UK right at this moment. I have my own thoughts as to where else the money is spent and possibly shouldn't be, some of those you might agree with and some you probably would not but I admit I am not fully equipped with facts so I won't embroil myself in an argument about my thoughts on that.

The trouble is, no one really knows why people are homeless. Mental issues, runaways, alcoholics, people who have lost everything, immigrants etc. They all play a part and I am sure that there are others too. Because of that there is no one solution, certainly not one that is palatable to most people. Personally I would take them off the streets and put them in some of the unused army camps. A six-twelve month programme where they have medical care, eat properly, learn life skills, physical training, and some form of education I feel pretty sure that this tried many years ago as the old army camp at Honiton near Exeter was housing some homeless people and food and training was supplied but after a few weeks it was closed as all the gear was nicked and the camp wrecked. The TA took it back and cleaned it all up again. It seemed a great idea at the time but never worked out I am afraid.
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

I agree with what others hinted, We need to look after our own first. A fella in Dartford aged 94 had been lying dead in his flat for two weeks, Seems he fell and broke his hip and unable to raise the alarm slowly died. His family had een asking for warden assisted property for him for the past 3 years but nothing avaliable. Lying dead in his flat for two weeks...shows how caring his family really were in not checking on him on a regular basis.

Living rough is a hard life and takes a great toll and exposes people to some pretty terrible experiences. Even in hostels often are subject to violence, sexaual assault and worse

I do not know what the guys you spoke to have done for themselves but there IS help out there for ex servicemen: I know in my case the royal marines give endless help to ex booties and help them in both health and job finding and accommodation. In Plymouth Derriford hospital any ex serviceman can get treated without any problem they even have military wards run by service doctors. I admit some ex servicemen fall, by the wayside but that is because they do not chase things up for themselves but rather expect to be waited on hand and foot and then some even end up on the streets which is all pretty sad but their own fault. Most servicemen get training and education on joining Civvy street months before they leave for good.
