Good idea - I presume you also back this in reverse, i.e. stop brexit and all the remainers will pay the EU fees?

This gives rise to endless possibilities - as a childless person, can I have all my taxes/rates back that went to educate other people's brats?

No there is nothing to pay.

The negotiations are paid by the EU that includes us anyway.

I can't see any real problem except some humble pie for some people.

absolutely - sounds like a plan! Pacifists get their military contributions back, vigilantes have no need for the police, etc

We have already covered all this ground already and the people voted leave. They had weeks to decide and were exposed to all the lies and spin you'd expect in a referendum from both sides.

The fact is that many people know that the EU will become a huge superstate run by the Germans where globalisation will only mean lower wages and masses of immigrants and most people don't want that. That trumps all other considerations.

Sorry, but that's not even remotely true - I didn't see a divorce bill mentioned once (by either side) during the campaign, and certainly not a £40bn+ one.

It speaks volumes for how bad the remain campaign was that they didn't make the electorate more aware of the financial commitments we had made to the EU, which I'm sure the politicians must have been aware of. I can understand why the Leave campaign wouldn't be shouting about it (although ethically it should certainly have been raised), but I find it staggering that remain didn't make more of a big deal of it - knowledge of a huge divorce bill like this would surely have swung more votes their way.

Either way, to suggest that this ground was covered before the referendum is just fabrication.

So we pay them 40 billion to leave, then we just demand our deposits with the European back on departure........ some 32-35 billion I believe!

I am not aware of any "deposits" with the European bank (presumably you mean the ECB?).

The UK has, however, capitalised the European Investment Bank (along with all EU countries) to the tune of £3.5 billion. This finances loans to EU countries for development projects. The loans are amortised over various periods up to 2054. Therefore the UK will not receive the £3.5 billion back in full until then (unless otherwise negotiated).

The actual monetary obligations that the UK has to the EU were signed up to by the government in 2014, and amount to more than £60-70 billion. Negotiations may reduce this, but with the present UK team doing the negotiating, don't bank on it!

I think Becky may be referring to EU projects that we've helped fund that have yet to come to fruition...it was mentioned on 5 Live this morning

Firstly Becky, you would have to reimburse the state for the taxes paid by others for your own upbringing.

All those taxes/rates paid for you as a child yourself by other people, your schooling welfare etc.

Assuming that you and C were children or 'brats' as you call them.
