To put matthau's post into perspective, it tends to be the fundamentalist moslem states that prohibit houses of worship for faiths other than islam. And it's the encroachment of islam in this country that he's highlighting.

India is a bad example but the point is valid.

If you could give a few examples then the point would be even more valid.

ok, take the word india away, haha.
just meant the fact that we live in a multi culteral society and that if a huge influx of europeans/north americans etc wanted all of a sudden to move into a country in the middle east and make their own homes there. and live the way they do over here, eg. white women being able to wear what they want, that wont be tollorated will it? yet over here we accept the lot.

There are large expat European and American communities all over the Middle East, most of whom live together in compounds where they do follow their own rules (alcohol, women's dress etc) and are mainly ignored by local officials because of the economic value they bring. This is true of Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait etc. So in fact your statement "that wont be tollorated" is way wide of the mark.

Been following the debate with interest, so iIf I could chuck a couple of pence worth in:
Yesterday's Metro (for those of you who are commuters) had a brief interview with a young black commedienne (can't rememebr the name). One of the questions was "what are you listening to at the moment" to which her reply was "Angie Stone, I like Joss Stone too, but I'm keeping it afro".
Two questions:
1. Is that a racist comment?
2. If not, then would it be if it were, let's say, a white commendian saying that he was listening to Eminem - "I like Dizzee Rascal too, but I'm keeping it white"?

Could quite possibly be the fact that Angie Stone actually has an afro and the commedienne has one too? I doubt a newspaper would allow racist comments in an interview.
