Lots of lumberjack jackets and sheepkings in the crowd, no logos on shirts (although we had that brilliant admiral trackie with Phillips on the back).

A nice bumpy and sanded pitch, Swindlehurst has just tucked the first away on 4 minutes but Don Masson and Mick Vitner hit the bar and post for County and just before half time Kmeber clears on off the line.

A big half time cheer as Sunderland were one down at home to Cardiff

Second half and Vince has just gone down like Ashley Young in the box so diving was on the agenda even back when football was still a mans game. Brian has just mentioned the Selhurst noise and a shot of a pretty packed Holmesdale terrace as Vince ties two Notts County defenders in knots. Its mostly Palace but County still giving us a game whilst we wait for Zico to amble forward, socks round his ankles to play a little one-two and a few fans are on the pitch with about 3 mins left...perfect

One thing I didnt know was 6 of that side were only in their first year of playng league football according to the dome headed Brian Moore and at the time we had only hit 11 in 16 - the back four really got us up for all that flair from Vince and Zico.

That period of about 1977 - 1980 was my golden age for Palace. Despite all of the success we had had since then, cup finals, cup semis, third in the league its still my rose tinted era and I would give my right arm to go back for a day.

My first game and season was in 1974 - we beat Preston on 24th September and one Bobby Charlton was PM for them.

Hooked from then on so was at the front end of the Venables revolution - he was still playing in 1974 and those young players were just starting at the club...a season or so later we had the back to back Youth Cup wins and then a fantastic 1st team from about 78..its like I was on a journey with them and they are MY team....all rose tinted cods but I know what I mean

As for the Big Match - Mullery and Horton interviewed after they beat relegated Blackburn 2-1 about how much they wanted to be champions and there was a cocky arrogance to the pari of them...we were still 4th but has those games in hand an the rest as they say is history

Memories. The whole 76 Cup Run really; Leeds, Sunderland, and Chelsea away all stand out. I think Dave Swindlehurst's goal at Elland Road, plus the entire performance, were major highlights. It wasn't a "lucky" giant killing; we took Leeds apart on every level.

With the promotion season/team of the eighties for some reason what I remember is midweek away matches on the run-in. I recall both Sunderland and Leicester falling that way, the former requiring a 24-hour unexplained absence from both home and school (before the days of mobile, but my dad had a pretty shrewd idea where I'd be). I think the coach left Selhurst about 10am (and got to Roker after Palace were 2-0 up) and didn't get back until about 4am.

Selhurst was a proper ground back then.
