The song was... "you're going home in a St. John's ambulance", and I think that there were always some St. John's ambulance staff pitchside.

What first struck me as a kid in the 70's in the Holmesdale Road end was the VERY STRONG smell of overcooked hamburgers mixed with cigarette smoke, it was like a smell that you didn't experience elsewhere (nor today). You almost felt like gagging on it, but it was the same smell at some other grounds when we went away.

We all crammed into the Holmesdale and there was a lot of pushing and surges... looking at some attendances in those days we were over 40,000.

There was a big mix of homegrown culture (skinheads, boneheads, punks and leather jacket types etc) in those days but Harrington jackets and Doctor Martins were I recall the order of the day... I think they used to check if you had steelies on (steel toecaps) sometimes.

Yes, there was nearly always a ruck in the middle of the Whitehorse away end a little before kickoff, lead by XXXXX !

I don't have a brilliant memory and probably lost a lot of brain cells along the way, but that's what sticks out, although Brighton away on boxing day 1979 was quite disturbing for a 15 year old when I look back at it now.

Mine's a light and bitter.

I'd love someone to confirm this, because the memory is very hazy. But I seem to remember the Holmesdale end singing (if you could call it singing) what I now know is the Funeral March (composed by Chopin) when an opposition player was carried off on a stretcher. Please someone tell me I'm right.

You are correct. And the Holmesdale (including me) added the word Sh**(At 18 seconds in to clip)at the end of the last note, very loud! I got told off for swearing though!

Indeed !

When that "Knees Up Mother Brown" was started, often hordes used to plummet down the terrace with some crashing into the barriers.Bloody dangerous.

I recall the days of Palace supporters being ejected from the Whitehorse where they went to confront 'Home' supporters.Recall them being marched along the side of the pitch and into the Holmesdale.

And the Millwall cries of "Warren, where are you ?" referring to Denny Warren.

Edited by Willo (23 Feb 2017 7.18pm)

Denny still has his seat in the Holmesdale.
Looked after me many years ago.

Palace 13th 2017/18.

Thanks for that. Having listened to your clip of the "original", I can't help feeling that Mr Chopin wouldn't have been very impressed with the Holmesdale's rendition of his piece!

I think it's quite funny now when you watch old 70's stuff, almost without fail at some stage you'll hear a chorous of "you're gonna get your fcuking 'eads kicked in' in the back ground

It was ok, he's season ticket had lapsed the season before so he didn't hear it.

Maybe we could have a 'Nostalgia Day' at Selhurst Park where supporters sing all the old songs.

Rather than all the vile chants why not :

"Those were the days my friend we are the Holmesdale End...." (Mary Hopkin).
"I hear the sound of distant bums, over there, over there..." (Jim Reeves)
The "Peanuts for sixpence" song etc etc etc

Would bring back some very happy memories

Was in the East Stand for Chelsea v Spurs late '78 - the ref upset the home support, and the entire shed sung 'you're a b****** referee' to the tune of Oh My Darling Clementine. And football grounds always used to smell of four things: piss, bubble/chewing gum, beer and tobacco smoke. Now it's only three things, or two depending on which part of the ground urin.
