Goods The UK goods trade has suffered its steepest five-year fall on record, highlighting how Brexit has reduced flows both into and out of Britain, say economists. The volume of UK goods imports and exports was 7.4 per cent smaller in 2023 than in 2018, the largest five-year decline in goods trade since comparable records began in 1997, according to FT calculations of data published by the Office for National Statistics on Friday. The ONS reported that the volume of imports fell 7.4 per cent compared with 2022 and was down 3.8 per cent compared with 2018. Meanwhile, exports fell 4.6 per cent year on year, with substantial drops in exports to both EU and non-EU countries. Over five years, export volumes fell 12.4 per cent.
It added that, after adjusting for inflation, the UK imported and exported less in 2023 than it did in 2018. In another blow to UK business, Britain and Canada paused talks over a new free trade agreement in January, meaning a post-Brexit arrangement with Canada is set to expire.

It is symptomatic of the derangement of the left when they blame absolutely anything on Brexit. They will still be doing it for years to come. You might just as well blame the repeal of the Corn Laws.

Donald Tusk, the Polish PM : “As we celebrate 20 years in the EU, a fierce debate is taking place in Great Britain caused by the World Bank's forecast that income per capita will be higher in Poland than in the UK in 2025. And I promise this: on the 25th anniversary, Poles will be wealthier than the British. It's better to be in the EU!”

You have only to travel to the EU to see that for yourself. It’s unmistakable. As I have frequently said Brexit was by far the biggest political mistake of my lifetime. One that was predicated by a Tory Party political miscalculation in trying to stymie UKIP and putting party before country and enabled by a self serving PM. If ever a party deserved to be consigned to history it is the Tories.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

It really is laughable when some guesses as to the income of people in Poland in a year's time is used as a proof that Britain leaving the EU several years ago was a 'disaster'. Edited by georgenorman (02 May 2024 6.19am)

Presumably there will shortly be a mass exodus of Poles from the UK then? It certainly didn’t happen post-Brexit. Unless, of course, the UK is not such a bad place for them….NHS,Schooling, wages, child benefit. Still let’s not allow facts to get in the way of anti UK sentiments Edited by Spiderman (02 May 2024 6.50am)

Given the state of this country, would anyone necessarily notice if they did?

For European countries, the UK is 2nd (behind Germany) in GDP at $4591 billion. Poland is 10th at $844 billion. In the last year the UK GDP has grown by 4.89%, Poland's by 0.24%.
