If you insert release clauses into players’ contracts I suppose you can’t complain too much if they ‘escape.’
I wonder if there are similar clauses for some of our other better players?
It is difficult to put a positive spin on this.
Palace have apparently been blindsided by Zaha’s potential departure and opposing clubs will be less fearful facing e.g Ayew and Gray in the wide positions as opposed to Zaha and Olise.
We already struggle offensively in terms of our strikers so these departures certainly wouldn’t help.
I also think the departures of such key players would have an unsettling effect on the rest of the squad.
I’m old enough to remember er the Team of the 80s fall apart and also the effect of Ian Wright’s departure.

35 million looks a bit on the low side. We took a gamble on a Championship player and it’s worked out well, let’s not sell ourselves short. We need to test how keen Chelsea are, bit weird they released him when he was 14 years old, funny old game!

The internet chat is that release clause is only for clubs in the CL. So Chelsea would have to have a bid accepted if they wanted him.

Which wouldn't be crazy high, as we'd know that a CL club could come in at 35m and get him

Was unaware and disappointed to find out that apparently he has a release clause of around 35m in his contract. I hope that has some limitations as in not being valid at the end of the window as one of the big boys surely will snap him up for that fee.

It was widely reported last year that he signed a longer and more lucrative deal with us. Part of the terms which he agreed was the scrapping of the £35m buy out clause.

We did benefit from him having an £8m release clause in his Reading contract.

His younger brother plays for Chelsea. I wonder if this has any "pulling power"?

Olise himself is a former Chelsea youth team player.

If he goes then I'll be disappointed in him. He's young enough to wait for a bit longer for a big money move, while continuing to get regular first team football with Palace.

Joining the mercenaries at Chelsea might be tempting financially but he'll struggle for game time there.

Q? are we(Palace) obliged to continue with his treatment if he definitely leaving & going elsewhere?

Will be very disappointed if he goes, more so than Zaha leaving, but will teach us a lesson about adding in ridiculous release clauses.

For what it's worth, there was an article a few months ago linking him to Arsenal that claimed at the time that he was intending to stay with us for another season at least to continue his development.

Of course that could be bollocks or he might have changed his mind, however you'd hope we could convince him to stay for another year with a guarantee that we sell him next summer, giving us enough time to get Rak-Sakyi more experience.

IMHO Olise simply wants to play for a big team ASAP. I doubt the money is the major factor. Having been released by Chelsea as a young teenager, he'll probably relish the chance to show them how wrong they were. Players don't have lowish release clauses in their contracts (8m at Reading and 35m at Palace) if they intend staying at a club for any length of time.

By '' big money '' in that context I was referring to the transfer fee.

Actually I thought that the release clause was increased after Olise signed a new contract a few months ago ?

I guess it's similar to MacAllister leaving Brighton for a fee well below his market worth.

From a player perspective ( and perhaps a supporter one too ), Palace are displaying all of the signs of a club with no more ambition other than to stay in the EPL. While some fans accept this, which I largely do, that's fine. But some of the more ambitious players in the squad will be questioning if they could do better than that, Olise being one of them.

Zaha obviously wanted champions league, but none of the big clubs wanted to make a move for him. At 30, he will now be on the decline. He was a great player for palace, wonderful pace, but his finishing always let him down and in my view stopped him from reaching the very top of the game. Big transfer window for palace- an opportunity to reset. We were being branded at one point as a one man team - we couldn't win without Zaha etc, which is never a good place to be. We need a few top players now to come in and quickly - We haven't had a decent goal scorer for years.
