Big Mal was a dreamer , a brilliant coach but a manager , no . I think he saw some of himself in Venables but realised TV had the better skill set of manager / coach to take forward the young players he had assembled , the rest as they say is history . A brilliant time to be a fan though watching those kids grow under Venables ,playing some of the best football seen in South London and rising to div 1 (where did it all go wrong?) 1 Venables Coppell was a breath of fresh air after the doldrum years under Mullery . Young ,enthusiastic and bright . Built a team we were all proud of .First ever cup final and a 3rd place finish that should have seen European football at Selhurst if not for the 11th hour reprieve given to Liverpool . I think that knocked the stuffing out of Coppell , he seemed to become a reluctant manager after that ,players left and it all just became a struggle . 2 Coppell There are a few who could have made it into my top three had they hung around long enough Freedman ,Bruce ,Pulis and Sam Allardyce all had us playing effective football ,Pardew was great in spells but was poor enough in others to be discounted . 3 Roy Hodgson

The 3 that stand out for me are ; Terry Venables A brilliant coach and man manager. The way he developed our young squad and took them to the top, playing great football all the way, was a joy to watch. Of course, it being Palace, it all came crashing down and far too soon. Steve Coppell A Ron Noades gamble that paid off. Steve was a deep thinker and a pragmatist. After a dodgy start, Steve found his managerial feet and assembled teams that liked to defy the odds. If we had got ( as we should have done ) European football, then maybe the break up up the Wright / Bright era team could have at least been delayed. Bert Head Not just a sentimental pick ( he was manager when I first started going to Palace ), Bert put together a selection of shrewd purchases, particularly from Scottish football. And together with homegrown talent like Jacko, David Payne and Steve Kember they brought top flight football to Selhurst Park for the first time. They then defied the odds for 3 seasons by staying up before getting relegated after Malcolm Allinson took over from Bert.

1) Sir Steve Coppell - Took us from the lows of the old Second Division to our highest ever top flight finish of 3rd place in the old First Division, as well as an FA Cup final. 2) Roy Hodgson - I’ll hold my hands up and admit that I didn’t want him as manager on both occasions, but I’ve been proven wrong twice now. He’s an absolute class act and kept us in the Premier League when everyone was writing us off after losing our opening 7 games. Now he’s showing what he can do with a talented squad. 3) Paul Hart - A short reign, but a memorable one in keeping us in the Championship when we were in administration, and had that points deduction. Honourable mentions go to Tony Pulis (I loved how he made us tough to beat on several occasions), Sam Allardyce (Ditto) and Iain Dowie (Bouncebackability) Edited by Alexi_the_Eagle (06 Sep 2023 9.03am)

Would agree on both counts , I think the most dissapointed I have been when a manager left was when Bruce did one to Birmingham I agree actually, because out of my top 3, Big Mal needed to go even though we all loved him, when Venables jumped ship to QPR I was angry and each time Sir Steve left it did sort of feel the timing was right, it had run it’s course, but when Bruce left we were top of the league and playing some great stuff and looking forward to an exciting season
