Roy’s one dimensional, immovable approach is to keep things tight and hope to edge each game. That was useful when the squad almost dictated its necessity however I’d argue it has a different look today. The match against Bournemouth highlighted the following for me, none of which is new or unexpected:

- The players don’t seem to be ‘playing for Roy’
- A lot of the players looked stifled and almost confused as to why this method is being employed
- We cannot defend set pieces
- The plan for actually mounting attacks and getting the ball forward is nonexistent
- Our only identifiable tactic is to have the centre halves pass it between themselves, occasionally inviting danger, and coupled with the above led to both Marc and Joachim actually running the ball forward themselves in lieu of any other tactic or option
- A lack of urgency, commitment, desire, any other descriptor of a similar nature in our play
- The usage of players who seem more malleable to archaic instruction over any flair, youth or inspiration providers
- No on-field leadership
- No real plan for attacking set pieces

Football has changed even over the past few years and Roy is old, very old. He looks far more a dinosaur now than ever. We look like a team that has had any ‘fun’ or unity sapped out of it, a shell of a team trying to follow unfit and outdated instructions. This is where the aversion to youth comes in alongside the lack of flair. Despite quite obviously not having any attacking knowledge Roy prefers players more likely to follow orders than, God Forbid, do anything themselves. This privilege is reserved for few, Wilf before and Eze/Olise now, however can be extremely ineffective and detrimental to both mentality and performance.

Our keeping Roy on was a real cheap move to try and save on the hiring of a manager worthy of expenditure and transfer fees (bizarrely buying players who don’t… play for us) and just keep us going another season. This has backfired badly. We’re as predictable as night following day, we are as boring as the drying paint and we are now losing game after game against weaker opposition.

There’s no sense in keeping Roy, none at all. Him decrying fans for having expectations of winning football matches is the final straw for me, he comes across as a bitter old man with the mental maturity of a teenage girl. He offers no answers or hope and tries to deflect any criticism or acknowledgment of his failings whatsoever, and he is failing badly.

He has to go, I’ll drive him myself, he’s fit to manage nothing here beyond a slide into the championship. Parish et al need to spend on players and they need to replace him. An age old and very generic solution but a necessary one for where we find ourselves currently. We’re getting nothing from this run of fixtures, 2 points would be a shock, and we’ll be in the relegation zone come January. I see that as almost guaranteed. If we see no movement whatsoever on the manager front and in the window, you can consider that a throwing in of the towel.

Very good post. My sentiments exactly.

It's like last season again. Can't win the games against those around us and now we go into a spell of playing the form teams, so our confidence will evaporate and we are in for a relegation battle. The stubborn refusal to try anyone under the age of 27 is just ridiculous. Remember last season we were safe with 7 games to play. Roy could have given players like Ahamada, Ozoh or any of the much touted boys a run of games to see what they could do, but he flatly refused. He even gave Jimmy Mac minutes and we knew he was leaving. No excuse for not finding out about some youth players and now we are suffering god it. Parish knows what he is like, so he should have provided him with players he would use. If he wanted the youth players used he shouldn't have given the job to Roy cos he's just a youth player Road block.
I mean, I even heard an interview with SP where he stated they didn't want to bring in too many cos they have to be mindful of the Academy players and not block their path to the first team, then he goes and appoints Roy. Not what I'd call joined up thinking.

Sick of reading who's out there to replace him, who would want the job. Constantly hiding behind this thinking is the Palace way. There are hundreds out there who we could turn to and every one of them is a risk, but unless we take it we will stay in this rut. Every other team takes a punt on managers, whereas we are too scared to actually make a decision and get someone.

There is no argument that we grateful to Roy for what he achieved last season. However, he should have had the sense to have been satisfied with that and left on a high to enjoy his retirement. I fear that his judgement was clouded and he thought he could perform more miracles. He should have said to the board thanks very much but now is the time for a younger man with the necessary vision and ambition. The board were at fault for wanting to do it on the cheap
We are where we are but I am not optimistic for the future. I hope I am proved wrong.

They probably only took Hodgson because no alternative would take the job without a commitment to improving the squad and did not feel that signing a South American teenager and a goalkeeper prone to injuries was the right investment
Hodgson will just say we need to play our experienced players against teams around us with the chance of gaining points and cannot damage the confidence of the youngsters by playing them against the better teams we are about to encounter. Catch 22
I have no idea what they are doing with Ftanca. If he is never going to play for the first eleven at least get him some game time with the U 21. Also, Ozoh should be getting some opportunities ahead of the likes of Hughes and Schlupp. He is a similar age and standard to Hinshelwood who is getting picked in a far superior Brighton team

The s*** summer transfer window coming home to roost. The squad just isn’t good enough. Roy will get the blame and the sack, while Teflon Steve and the board escape criticism.
Whoever we bring in, won’t do any better with the unbalanced squad we have.
I suspect Paddy will get the job, as it will once again be the cheap option. We’ll bomb and possibly go down.
Can’t help have one sympathy for Roy, he was stitched up. Though felt he should have retired.
Hang you head in shame Steve Parish , you’ve let down a decent man and the fans. Time to try and sell the club and relinquish control. You can no longer help us compete in this league.

Why didn't Roy mention this in his post match interview, instead of calling the fans "spoilt"?

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

As I imagine he’d be sacked immediately and the fans would say he’d lost the plot.
I really can’t see how anyone is going to get much better out of this imbalanced squad. 5-6 really good players, probably the same number bang average, and the rest nowhere near the required level.

Look at the bench and who was going to come on and change it. The board never allowed for injuries and invested in players for the future. We needed players for the right now.

Great post. The lack of ideas once we cross the halfway line is embarrassing. You may not have your best players to execute the plans, but you at least need to have some plans otherwise you see dross like we've seen most of this season.

In my opinion Roy is doing the best with the limited resources he has. Parish should have brought in some more players in the summer - the team is only half decent when both Olise and Eze play and both have had injury problems this season. The squad is too thin and we don't have a decent goal scorer.

Roy is the reason that the owners feel empowered to demonstrate a complete lack of ambition. Another manager wouldn't stand for it.

Vieira joined and within two months we'd signed Olise, Andersen, Guehi, Gallagher, Edouard and Johnstone. He would have demanded that support in order to join.

Roy, on the other hand, said we should be happy with our squad this season despite the glaring holes in about 4 positions.

He was never a manager for the long term, only the short term, and if the short term isn't even working anymore then there's no reason to have him.

Get Graham Potter or Steve Cooper in, both of whom have a track record with young players, give them 6 months with the squad before the summer window to see what they want / need and then back them.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

On the assumption that we lose the next two v Man City and Liverpool, then the following game v Brighton becomes the critical one.
If we lose that too, I think Hodgson will go if a replacement has been identified.
It would be something of a coincidence because Vieira also went after a defeat to Brighton last season.

In my view it would be the right decision too.
At the moment we're getting Watford Roy rather than the Roy at the end of last season.
Roy has one way of playing and if that doesn't work he appears clueless as to what to do.
He's had a great career and overall done a good job for us, but that shouldn't blind us to the deficiencies which are all too evident.
It sometimes looks like we're playing a different game to the opposition with our rigid set up and lack of movement as against their fluidity, interchange of positions and innovative approach.
The squad has weaknesses, but it was only at the beginning of the season Roy was saying how pleased he was with the squad and many fans were saying we had the best team in our history.
The loss of Doucoure and Eze is bad, but cannot be used in isolation as an excuse for the inept and toothless performances.

I know Roy is getting old but last night he looked really old and stressed so I think he should now retire for his own health . He has done a great job with journey men players sprinkled with a a few flair players and numerous injuries He has kept us up on and off for a decade with very little help from parish and co Eternally grateful to Roy but now is the time to retire
