It`s probably The Beatles all things considered BUT I`m gonna chuck The Smiths into the melting pot.

Beatles for me, Cider Eagle summed up why.

But by decade:
60s: Beatles
70s: Might just plump for Thin Lizzy
80s: The Cure
90s: REM
00s: Dunno, getting too old for this.

No-one's mentioned the Rolling Stones yet?

i would have to say, 'QUEEN', I don't really listen to them but if i had to chose one it would deffinatly be them.

Clearly you have never heard them then! How can anyone justify Queen?

My sisters' corpse

Thy never got round to releasing (or playing, or writing) any actual music but in terms of potential, they're one of the greats.
The lead singer was a devilishly handsome genius.

how can i justify them well after songs such as:
Bohemian Rhapsody
Don't Stop Me Now
We Will Rock You
We Are The Champions
I Want To Break Free

and a few more that is how i would justify queen.

My sisters' corpse

The lead singer was a devilishly handsome genius.

The trouble was, one of the guitarists looked like Danny Baker.

The Beatles. Nobody else comes close in terms of popularity, influence AND critical acclaim. People will still know their songs in a hundred years time, which can't be said of many other bands.

I'm personally not an enormous fan of them, but as CiderEagle has pointed out, in terms of influence, there is no band that has or will come close to them.

They spawned an entire culture and no other band has done anything to compare to that.
