We also have far too many landlords.

We need to promote home ownership where people live in the house they own. Second homes and too many landlords is a luxury that poor economic and housing planning has gone to excess.

We need housing and housing ownership and there are far too many people hoarding housing for personal profit.

It has a use but not to this extent.

Perhaps those who like authoritarianism should have some authoritarianism applied to themselves.

Strongly agree on this - landlordism is a plague and the commodifying of the most basic of human necessities has had disastrous consequences for so many people, while making a small minority considerably richer.

Landlords and rents are also one of the biggest drivers of inflation in the country - people talk about not giving out big pay rises as it causes inflation, but are happy for landlords to continually drive up their own income year on year.

Fully agree.

As you know I strongly oppose our policies on immigration but if that's going to be a policy then you need house building and ownership to match it.

Landlords are taking advantage of a situation created by government that reduces the general success of the next generation....the fact that far fewer of them get to own a home is a scandal....a betrayal.

I genuinely think government of every type has been completely irresponsible on housing....well, pretty much all my adult life. They have used rising house prices as an easy economic income and pulled the ladder up for young people...pure short termism.

If you're going to increase a population massively in a situation where people are dying much older then build the frigging houses and infrastructure for them.

It's enough to make you go spare.

You will not admit that you are factually wrong.

A few?

There are approximately 1m Irish, 5m EU citizens and god knows how many Commonwealth who can vote so your statement that you have to be a citizen to vote is not true.

You should apply to Palace I hear they are looking for someone to move the goalposts.

Edited by Badger11 (28 Feb 2024 1.04pm)

My original remark was entirely in the context of parliamentary elections as that was the subject under discussion.

You then “moved the goalposts” by mentioning local elections. I am addressing the situation in England and not the devolved administrations.

I had though overlooked the fact that many Commonwealth and Irish citizens, who are ordinarily resident in the UK, can retain their original nationality and vote here, provided they register to do so. They have no need to acquire British citizenship alongside the other to do so. You cannot though just travel over from Dublin and vote. I do wonder though how much longer this will apply to the Irish, given they remain part of the EU and have distanced themselves from the traditional ties that once existed.

What’s certain is that there is no general right for non citizens to vote in any UK election, which is what your initial response implied.

Because they completely destroy your argument perhaps?

No one argues that selective small scale immigration is a problem.
That is not what is happening.

Where do think all the “others” are coming from? On small boats? Illegally in other ways?

The number coming here to work or study is not small. 39% of visas issued in the year to June last year were to study. The vast majority of students go home after their course ends. 33% are working visas, the biggest employer being the NHS. Then there are the humanitarian visas issued to Ukrainians. Then family visas.

Do you want the NHS to be in an even greater mess than it already is?

Do you want to deny British universities the fee income they derive from oversees students?

Do you want to keep families apart?

Do you not want to offer sanctuary to displaced people?

No to the first, but that can be fixed with policy.

I put my family and its future generations first.
Universities are businesses. I'm not concerned with making them more profitable.

If people want to be with their families that badly, then they should stay where they are.

Offering sanctuary is something that Western nations can no longer afford to do. An ever increasing number will want it, and we have to say no, or our societies will crumble.

I am a landlord!

I took a redundant, uninhabitable property, spent £125,000 on it 10 years ago to covert it into 3 small letting units for which there was a big shortage in its locality. There is almost no availability of such units through either the council or housing associations.

My current tenants are an elderly lady who was cheated out the home she owned by relatives taking advantage of her kind nature, an elderly couple who have moved to be close to their son and an ex convict trying, and succeeding to rebuild his life.

I look after my tenants. Good ones are worth looking after. Any problems get sorted swiftly. Rents tend not to be raised during tenancies and are now behind inflation.

I am proud of what I have done. A need has been met that wasn’t. At the same time the income it produces beats interest rates, even now with higher rates and the value of the property has increased to.

I am not responsible for government policy or failures. My units would be almost impossible to sell individually so will always be rented. There is a need for them in the way some people live today.

Case closed then. The other 4,600,000 rented properties in the country are obviously in exactly the same situation.

JHFC , he goes on and on.

The only way I can stay without a yellow card is to ignore him and not respond directly.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

For sixty-seventy years liars and/or fools have pushed multiculturalism and/or integration as a pathway to improve the country.

Integration only ever works with small numbers and then only at 1 in 3.

Those people are a benefit and accepted.

This isn't and this is the normal result:

Kids say stupid things so they get a pass from me. It would have been a better video if it was adults.

Personally I don't view this as 'shrug of the shoulders' worthy. Lessons learnt early in life are important and more frequently than not prove decisive in the final product. As a teacher and parent I'm well aware of it.

I mean, what exactly do you think is going to change their opinion?

There is a reason that the wealthy spend so heavily to get early education right for their offspring....from their perspective that is.
