James Bauchop has the dishonour of being the first Crystal Palace player to get sent off.

It took Palace more than three seasons to get a red card and inside forward Bauchop claimed this unwanted place in the record books.

Bauchop had made his name in his native Scotland after helping Celtic win league titles in 1906 and 1907.

After a spell with Norwich City, he moved to Southern League Division One Palace in March 1908 where he would only stay for just over a season.

His first goal arrived in an enjoyable win over arch-rivals Millwall and he later bagged a hat-trick against Portsmouth along with a brace in the draw with FA Cup holders Wolves at Molineux.

Bauchop's landmark dismissal came in a local derby clash against Croyon Common in the London Cup on September 30, 1908.

It is not known what Bauchop saw red for but the Sauchie-born player netted in the next round 2-1 exit to Woolwich Arsenal.

He had a fine record in front of goal with the Glaziers and was the club's top scorer in 1908/09 with 19, knocking in 26 goals from 47 appearances overall.

Bauchop left for Derby and had further stints with Tottenham, Bradford Park Avenue, Doncaster and Lincoln. He was in the Tottenham side that was defeated by Palace in the 1913 London Cup Final.
