Team news

Palace manager Alan Pardew will make wholesale changes for the cup tie which will give him the chance to run the rule over some fringe players.

Palace's French international midfielder Yohan Cabaye is set to return from his groin injury, while winger Bakary Sako and forward Connor Wickham could start.

Centre half James Tomkins won't feature after sustaining a knee injury against Stoke at the weekend.

Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez is out with a groin problem which means fellow front man Charlie Austin is likely to step in.

Quotes

Roy Hodgson

"I have definitely got to give some game time to some players in Wednesday, as we had a few players who missed pre-season. So they must play at a certain level. There will be a lot of changes for the League Cup game.

"Of course, we want to win it but I want to see a few other players and I have got to rest the guys who played against Stoke for the weekend at Sunderland."

Joe Ledley

"It doesn't matter who the gaffer puts out, you are going to represent Crystal Palace Football Club and you have to go and perform to the best possible standard that you can.

"Obviously it is going to be difficult though because Southampton are a good team with a good squad and we will need to go there and perform.

"We have played them a few times [in cups] and come out on top, but we don't want to jinx that and we know it will be a hard game."

Claude Puel

"All the time for me it's important to win, and to win in different competitions, because I think it is very important for the future. All the squad, all the players can have some participation, to improve the young players and also to make progress.

"It's important to keep the idea to improve all the players, not just 10 or 11. It's not possible to play three games in a week so if we give some time to all the players who can improve and arrive with this group then we can see a good squad, not just for today, but for the future."
