Khan has denied this, however this is definitely under consideration by all political parties and not just for London. Tory ministers have mentioned this in the past, it's not a simple Labour vs Tory policy.

If we all go electric then the petrol tax revenue will drop significantly so the parties are all looking at what to replace it with.

In theory it sounds good the people who use the roads most pay the most however I have yet to hear a politician explain how they will collect the money.

TFL has at least 300,000 people who have not paid their ULEZ or congestion fine. There are at least 700,000 dodgy cars on the road, stolen, false number plates, uninsured, untaxed etc.

Does anyone think these people will pay this charge? And this is before we get into a Poll Tax protest which is bound to happen.

Personally I think it's a terrible idea but I suspect it will happen either Labour or Tory parties will end up doing it in a few years time.

Of course it means the government will be able to track you where ever you go, but not to worry your personal data is safe and wont be hacked. I mean it's not like some bloke is going to hack in to stalk his ex is it!

And there will be exceptions to charging e.g. Ambulances and police (fair enough) and MPs of course because their work is vital.

If your poor however or live in an area where there is no public transport too bad.

One of the advantages of the current petrol / fuel tax is even the dodgy* people pay it and of course the more you drive the more you pay.

This road usage charge will be bureaucratic, expensive and full of holes for the dishonest. In other words just the type of dumb idea that politicians love.

*Unless you do a runner from the Petrol station.

Exactly. A price well worth paying. We should build an Antarctic Las Vegas to make it worth visiting. Heating will be a problem but there will be loads of oil available when everyone is driving an electric car.

The ULEZ extension widens the tax on dirty air and should be welcomed.

Ultimately, we should be moving towards a full road-pricing system that accounts for the social and environmental costs of driving. Ulez may not be perfect, but it is a step in the right direction towards making the polluter pay.

Sunak and Starmer just a couple of snake-oil salesmen, shabby opportunists with no policies except to chase the next vote.

Good! Most people who I know, that masquerade as poor or modestly incomed hardworking folk, only drive their vehicles as they love pollutants and hate the environment. Pricing them out of being able to transport themselves, whether to make a living or within their personal lives, is surely fantastic for the economic and social health of the country no?

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
